What Is SEO?

To put the term, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), as simply as possible is really hard to do. There are so many factors that affect your website’s visibility and ranking on major search engines. The simplest way I can summarize SEO is:

Back in the early 2000’s, during the Dot-Com burst (and bust), companies rushed to get a website established. Since then, the industry has transformed and so has the average Web user. Google has complex algorithms and requisites it uses to rank websites. Research into user experience has shown web designers and developers how to make great websites that engage and interact with users.

However, a lot of business owners are still under the assumption that having a website is good enough. Some choose the cheap route and use Wix, SquareSpace or other Web builders.

All of these are viable options, but from my experience nothing beats having your own website that’s optimized to reach the people searching for businesses like yours.

Anyone can design a website that looks great, but not everyone understands the science behind search engines. Anyone can build a free website with a Web builder, but most of those platforms break the code to a point where search engines can’t even read the content.

On-Page SEO Services

On-Page SEO is quite in-depth with many different factors that need to be considered. Here’s a sample of what I look at:

Content is the king factor in SEO. Quality content is the #1 factor in determining rank. Here I’ll look at keyword placement & density, readability & grammar, proper use of heading tags, how old the content is, is there any duplicate content, and more.
Architecture looks at the HTML layout and coordination of content on the page. Is the content easy to read and legible on all devices? Is it in the right place? Do the content containers break off the page? Are there major code errors? Are your URL’s too long?
Page Load Speed
Google wants your website to be really, really fast, so much so that their AMP technology does just that for mobile devices. You don’t need AMP, though. Here I look at image/code compression, move certain scripts to the footer for faster loading, and a lot more.
Meta Tags
One important part to SEO is the information you never see: the meta tags. Here I will check for appropriate document type and character set declaration, optimize your Title & Description tags, check for correct code order, and if you’re using microdata.
Security & Trust
Your online reputation goes a long way. Today, you need a HTTPS secure website if you’re collecting any information whatsoever from your users. If your site is WordPress, I’ll make sure that it’s protected. I also check for low-quality websites that might be link to you, and more.
Search Penalties
Here I check to see if your content is too thin (i.e. not enough there), does your design includes cloaking (i.e. do search engines see your site differently?), keyword stuffing (repeated words with no context) and hidden keywords due to design flaws.
